Received unit July 9 here in the Western US in 8 eight days &#8212; intact with no damage. Thank you Thomann for the great and efficient service! <\/p>\n<p>I am a seasoned player (40+ years) and wanted a decent practice instrument. I have owned \/ played many guitars (classical, electric, steel string acoustic, etc) in the past (ranging from the hand made to the very mediocre). I intended to use this unit solely for classical playing\/practicing. My priorities in selecting an instrument are: Sound\/Tone, Playability, and a distant third, Appearance. <\/p>\n<p>I was swayed to buy this unit based upon online research, YT videos, and posted reviews (I had never seen this instrument personally ever). <\/p>\n<p>As with most instruments in the lower end of the price range, this unit offers a mix of advantages and deficiencies. <\/p>\n<p>From previous experience, I immediately set out to upgrade\/hone aspects which are often lacking: I polished frets (using 0000 steel wool only). The surfaces were quite rough. Also replaced plastic saddle with bone unit. I raised the height of the fitted saddle to improve tone and overall volume slightly. Finally, I changed out strings (I prefer LaBella 2001 HTs). These changes made noticeable sonic improvement. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the all-solid wood construction, I was still a bit disappointed that the high notes (fretted notes on 1st or 2nd string for example) don&#8217;t ring as loud and clear as I had hoped. <br \/>The guitar does have that balanced solid spruce midrange-focused tone however. <\/p>\n<p>Frets: One fret was not properly seated (13th fret, under high E string). I used a padded clamp to press it into place. There are a few frets that are a tad high during the fret-rocker test. <br \/>They are not bad enough to be a major sonic concern however. <br \/>Polishing seems to have circumvented fret height differences. <br \/>Overall construction of the unit is good however. In particular, the neck position and geometry are spot on (very important in absence of truss rod). Interior fitting\/gluing is also very good. <br \/>The tuners are average. Mine bound and wound unevenly when I re-strung with high tension strings. <br \/>Wish list: thinner finish would work equally well. A matte type option would be very desirable (less finish generally = more sound). <\/p>\n<p>Having said all the above, I do give a recommendation to buy. <br \/>It is worth the time and expense to get one and tweak\/fix it up. <\/p>\n<p>Footnote: finally, for those that also like to upgrade and maximize the sound of guitars like the S 4\/4.. One thing you can do to help improve the sound and responsiveness of an acoustic guitar is to CAREFULLY place it on or in front of a speaker cabinet\/stereo and play music loudly. The acoustic vibrations will invoke the wood (especially the soundboard) to vibrate and that ultimately will help your instrument sound better sooner. Sounds goofy but it works. <\/p>\n<p>Planning on buying another Thomann or VGS guitar in the upcoming months.. <\/p>\n<p>(apologies for the long post) <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"inner text-original js-text-original\" lang=\"en\" data-orig-lang=\"en\"> This guitar is an astounding value. Thomann shipped it from Germany to me in the USA. It took only three days, and the guitar arrived in great condition. Thomann&#8217;s customer service is excellent, and everything arrived as promised with no surprise customs fees or anything like that. <\/p>\n<p>I replaced the stock plastic saddle for a bone one, but that&#8217;s all the setup that I did. I checked the intonation, it was solid. The sound is very warm with a buttery midrange, it has a richness that&#8217;s without parallel for a guitar at this price point. It is quite playable right out of the box, once the strings have a chance to settle in at the proper tension. The stock strings aren&#8217;t bad, either. Some have felt that the action is too high, but I found it to be the rather standard string height that you find on classical guitars. They do string &#8217;em high in this realm. All you need is a bit of sandpaper to sand down the bottom of the bridge if you want to lower it, though. <\/p>\n<p>It seems like this is too good to be true and I&#8217;m waiting for a catch. But there isn&#8217;t one! I&#8217;m trying to think of a &quot;con.&quot; I guess some have not liked the tuners &#8212; but they function just fine. I don&#8217;t plan to replace them. Yes, the maple sides and back aren&#8217;t that boldly grained in appearance. But they are pleasing! My guitar happens to have a very nice grain pattern in the back of the neck, and also on a place on the back. <\/p>\n<p>This thing met and exceeded every expectation I had. Yes, it is not a concert classical guitar, but for a student or intermediate guitar it is wonderful. It should only get better with age as the solid wood opens up! It&#8217;s clean, there are not much harmony on the treble, i love this setting. And the bass is deep enough. For multi-voicing pieces, like playing JS Bach, this guitar sounded accurate and fast response. <br \/>But this type of guitar don&#8217;t sound good in romantic pieces. <br \/>Then flamenco test, its quite amazing that when strum on it, it has a sharp punch!! The sound is raw, with deep punchy bass, nail-string percussion in high pitch, and the effect is very suitable for flamenco music. <br \/>So from this price range, in normal case, we just consider the built quality. But this guitar sounded well!!! <br \/>However, you need to play it loud with carbon strings. Well built. Action perfect. Intonation at the 12th fret spot on. Nicely finished well grained woods. Surprisingly rich sound from a thniline guitar. Good even output from the pickup across all the strings. <\/p>\n<p>All in all, a fine instrument let down by two poorly placed items: the control panel for the EQ\/tuner and the input jack\/battery box. Both of these items were fitted off-centre (between the top and back of the guitar). This guitar is only 279? and trust me this is a bargain. <br \/>Quality wood, excellent finish (burned guitar neck!!!), nice blackwood fretboard, I believe their own in-house piezo pickup system with a nice looking tuner, additional xlr out-put (wow), I believe a bone nut (if I am wrong shame on me) and it is super slim. <br \/>The string snapped unfortunately a little bit, right out of the box, but I called Thomann and the new strings are on the way. <br \/>What actually does not do justice to this guitar is the really brief review since this is a killer guitar! <br \/>If you&#8217;re looking for a nice classical guitar and have 279? More than enough for a beginner. One con regarding the sonic attributes of the instrument is that the G string sound a bit quieter through the pickup. I read that it has something to do with the piezo pickup placement. <\/p>\n<p>The visual cons are the paint which is a bit rough and the sticker around the soundhole which I find quite ugly (and it did not match the photograph) and I am looking for a replacement. <\/p>\n<p>Yet, overally it is a satisfactory product for the price. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"inner text-original js-text-original\" lang=\"en\" data-orig-lang=\"en\"> I decided to surprise my father with this guitar as a gift. <\/p>\n<p>Its mainly for home use and to record some tracks on the Laptop. I also hook it up to a small PA system i have in the attic and it sounds great. <\/p>\n<p>Pros: The guitar looks amazing, the finishing is really good! The size and feel is spot on. When connected to the PA the sound is awesome! The pickup system sound fantastic as well as the D&#8217;Addario strings . The built in tuner is very precise and really comes in handy while tuning. The hardware and jack connector fell like quality material. <\/p>\n<p>Cons: A very small paint blur where the white stripe merges with the black but you can hardly notice it and its really tiny. The guitar sounds nice although I wish it sounded a bit brighter. The G string seems to be a little off in regard to intonation. I doesn&#8217;t sound quite normal even when tuned. The guitar also loses tune rather quickly, however I haven&#8217;t changed the strings yet so they may be the cause. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a rather novice guitar player so my knowledge is questionable. <\/p>\n<p>IMO this guitar is well worth the price. I wanted a nylon string for jazzy and prog tones. All work flawlessly and make it nice to use. There was even a battery installed! The finish is fine and there are no defects or blems, satin not glossy, which I prefer <\/p>\n<p>Cons: <br \/>The bridge height is set rather high, making the action about 1\/4&quot; at the 12th fret, making it difficult to play. For a beginner, this would be a problem. I&#8217;m going to file both the saddle and its block lower and get on with life. There is ample material there to do so. It&#8217;s still well worth the money to me and once set, seems like it will be a fine addition to my selection of instruments. I&#8217;ll update this review once I finish that effort. <\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: <br \/>For the money, it&#8217;s an excellent value, even with the high action. If the action were controlled better at the factory, I would have given quality 5 stars instead of 4, it&#8217;s that good IMO. If it were not a fixable problem, I would have taken off more stars. If you had to pay for such a repair, it would easily cost between $50 and $100 at a shop.
