With a few twists of a knob, a beginner could conjure a convincing (for the time) Boogie-style tone, the bark of an AC30, or a smooth blackface Twin Reverb sound. Those early Spider amps were a revelation for many. And the Spider V 120 may set a new standard\u2014yet again\u2014for amp-modeling bang for the buck. But to think of the Spider V 120 exclusively as a modeling amp would be a disservice. It\u2019s packed to the gills with features that aid composition and recording, too. Behind the amp\u2019s sleek black and silver grille cloth hides a bi-amped full-range speaker system comprised of a 12&quot; and a tweeter, which serve many of the same functions as flat-response monitor speakers. Most of the \u201cspeaker\u201d coloration you hear from the Spider comes from the models themselves. Unconventional speaker arrays are also a feature of Line 6\u2019s more expensive Firehawk 1500 and AMPLIFi products. And though the concept is probably counterintuitive to players that fret over differences between regular guitar speaker types, it is key to Spider\u2019s ability to reproduce everything from acoustic-electric guitar sounds to thick bass tones. Digital high-gain sounds in affordable modelers can inspire dread, but many of them sounded spot-on here at moderate volumes. The front of the amp is clean and attractive with relatively few controls (drive, 3-band EQ, volume, and master volume), which helps maintain the streamlined look. The downside is that the clean control surface requires players to navigate menus via the push-button array to find tones. It\u2019s not a difficult process, but it means the Spider might not be the kind of amp you want to get to know onstage. In the more relaxed environs of your home or studio, you can also take advantage of the free Spider Remote app (available for iOS and Android) for your smartphone or tablet device. You just plug your phone or tablet into the back of the amp, open the app, and tweak away via the easy-to-use interface. It was either this Spider V or a Katana. Since i already owned the FBV3 board, I decided to order thiss one. <br \/>Out of the box it worked like a charm. I have a soft spot for modeling amps. Listen, I know they&#039;re not traditionally cool, but I love them. My first big girl amp was a modeling amp, and I&#039;ve actively gigged with the Fender Champ XD (and I keep it at my practice space and play it every week). The Fender Mustang GTX100 is unlike any modeling amp I&#039;ve played before. It comes loaded with over 180 settings, which include variations of different amps, different pedals, and different gain, volume, EQ, and reverb settings. And even though there&#039;s only one speaker in the amp, it has left\/right outputs and, if you&#039;re playing with headphones, the stereo effects sound fantastic to my ears. When it comes to the pre-sets, some are great, and some are fine. Few are what I would describe as &quot;bad,&quot; but even so, they show what&#039;s possible with the amp. Using the app with this amp is an absolute must. For one, it makes it easier to connect the amp to wifi and update the firmware. It also makes it possible to download other pre-sets, some of which are made by artists including Grimes. You can easily adjust settings on the pre-sets and save over the factory-included ones. It&#039;s easy enough to do this for gain, volume, EQ, and reverb on the amp itself, but I highly recommend using the app to edit the effects. With the amp, you can also build your own pre-sets. You can choose from tons of pedals (based on real pedals) and amps (based on real amps). The amps and pedals (and pre-sets for that matter) that aren&#039;t Fender products have cute and smart names that you can usually figure out pretty easily. You can set it to as low as 0.5W for quiet bedroom practice and then crank it to 50W if you&#039;re playing in a live setting. I&#039;d say the only thing I&#039;d want to see as an improvement is a smartphone app like the Boss Katana Air. Unfortunately to really fine tune FX you need to use the Boss Tone Studio which currently only works on PC and Mac. At this price point though, I&#039;m not complaining. The tone quality is the main thing at the end of the day and the Katana range knocks it out of the Ball park. Enjoy!
