I was pretty happy with my Frontman, but I decided to try and expand my possibilities with the Katana. <\/p>\n<p>Buying the Katana was a great decision that allowed me to evolve as a guitarist and learn about tones. I moved from the two channels (clean \/ overdrive) of my previous amp to all the different amp modes of the Katana (4 with variation + acoustic) and all the effects it includes. I think this is a great option for exploring possibilities and checking out how different pedals \/ effects sound for those who are not very familiar with tone crafting. At this point I have to say that the sheer number of possibilities can be daunting, but you can always start from the presets or third-party tones available in online communities. <\/p>\n<p>PROS: <br \/>&#8211; A lot of effects and amp modes with endless possibilities for different tones, which allow trying new sounds, especially useful for beginners. <br \/>&#8211; You can connect it to your computer for recording or to manage the tones through the GUI. <br \/>&#8211; 8 patches can be stored in memory, allowing to switch between different tones quickly without using the computer. For this, the switch pedal sold separately is great, allowing to switch while playing. <br \/>&#8211; The effects loop comes in quite handy for my looper pedal. <br \/>&#8211; The amp sounds great to my inexperienced ears. <br \/>&#8211; The power switch allows to play indoors without the neighbors having to call the police. <\/p>\n<p>CONS: <br \/>&#8211; With the huge number of possibilities it might be a daunting task fiddling around with all the options to find the tones you like. Also, the official tone patches were quite limited last time I checked, relying heavily on non-official communities. <\/p>\n<p>Overall, I am really happy with my purchase and would never think about going back to my Frontman after this, I think it&#8217;s great value for the money. I would recommend buying it with the switch pedal for changing channels while playing. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"inner text-original js-text-original\" lang=\"en\" data-orig-lang=\"en\"> Using the Boss Katana with a GA-FC and Expression pedal really opens up access to a variety of tones and effects from the amp. <br \/>I have not enjoyed the sound or experience of modelling amps until I tried this one. The tone is good, most of the effects seem to be near perfect emulations of the actual pedals. <br \/>The software to edit amp settings really allows for a wide tonal palette for your amp but can be a bit tricky to learn and set up (i spent the first 2 days just creating\/editing tones &amp; patches for the amp). But it is worth it. <br \/>The amp itself is also not the heaviest. It is a comfortable weight to be carried by the handle. (something I noted as a gigging musician) <br \/>The power adjustment (0.5W, 50W, 100W) is exremely useful going from apartment, to practice space, to the gig. <br \/>This is by far the most versatile jamming &amp; gigging amp I have come across, but it is essential to have a footswitch (and expression pedal) to exploit the amps features. <br \/>As an added bonus the software allows you to assign quite a few footswitches and expression pedas to give you very detailed control of your sounds &amp; The Boss Katana range has absolutely been blowing minds with how good it sounds, and I could not agree more. I was shocked when I found out how cheap this amp was, I would have killed for something this amazing when I was starting out. You can set it to as low as 0.5W for quiet bedroom practice and then crank it to 50W if you&#039;re playing in a live setting. I&#039;d say the only thing I&#039;d want to see as an improvement is a smartphone app like the Boss Katana Air. Unfortunately to really fine tune FX you need to use the Boss Tone Studio which currently only works on PC and Mac. At this price point though, I&#039;m not complaining. The tone quality is the main thing at the end of the day and the Katana range knocks it out of the Ball park. Enjoy! I have a soft spot for modeling amps. Listen, I know they&#039;re not traditionally cool, but I love them. My first big girl amp was a modeling amp, and I&#039;ve actively gigged with the Fender Champ XD (and I keep it at my practice space and play it every week). The Fender Mustang GTX100 is unlike any modeling amp I&#039;ve played before. It comes loaded with over 180 settings, which include variations of different amps, different pedals, and different gain, volume, EQ, and reverb settings. And even though there&#039;s only one speaker in the amp, it has left\/right outputs and, if you&#039;re playing with headphones, the stereo effects sound fantastic to my ears. When it comes to the pre-sets, some are great, and some are fine. Few are what I would describe as &quot;bad,&quot; but even so, they show what&#039;s possible with the amp. Using the app with this amp is an absolute must. For one, it makes it easier to connect the amp to wifi and update the firmware. It also makes it possible to download other pre-sets, some of which are made by artists including Grimes. You can easily adjust settings on the pre-sets and save over the factory-included ones. It&#039;s easy enough to do this for gain, volume, EQ, and reverb on the amp itself, but I highly recommend using the app to edit the effects. With the amp, you can also build your own pre-sets. You can choose from tons of pedals (based on real pedals) and amps (based on real amps). The amps and pedals (and pre-sets for that matter) that aren&#039;t Fender products have cute and smart names that you can usually figure out pretty easily.
