I was a great surprise!! I could not be more happy. It has a really nice clear sound, and great volume. But what surprised me it was the overdriven sounds. For low volumes, it truly delivers a nice round warm overdriven sound, that makes you enjoy practicing. Its really simple to use, and even have some on-board effects for even more fun while playing. <\/p>\n<p>Pros: <br \/>-Quality of construction: Well manufacturer, clear connections, and very robust, yet lightweight. <br \/>-The size: Very portable, fits on a drawer, an can run on batteries. <br \/>-The sound: Amazing sounds!!. I had other practice amps, and even when the clean sound are good, the overdrives are usually, well, not enjoyable . However, this one delivers a great and playable overdriven sound, at lower volumes. I have valve amps, so I am very &quot;picky&quot; for the overdrive sounds, and this ones delivers . I&#039;d say the only thing I&#039;d want to see as an improvement is a smartphone app like the Boss Katana Air. Unfortunately to really fine tune FX you need to use the Boss Tone Studio which currently only works on PC and Mac. At this price point though, I&#039;m not complaining. Before purchasing this one, I tried other practice amps but I wasn&#8217;t satisfied. After I bought this one, I ended up using it more than my Marshall and Fender amps! <\/p>\n<p>Pros: <br \/>&#8211; This is not a modeling amp! In other words, it does not try to replicate the sound of a Marshall, a Fender, a Vox, an Orange, etc. It has its own characteristics as an amp. <br \/>&#8211; The amp types\/channels (Clean, Crunch, Lead, and Brown) do what they are supposed to do! I mainly use the clean and crunch channels. The clean channel is great, with a little bit of reverb, your licks sound fantastic. The crunch is my favorite, it just adds the right amount of crunchiness, such that the pedal effects that come after still sound fantastic! I rarely use Lead and Brown channels, even though I play metal %40 of the time. <br \/>&#8211; Then there are the effects, which can be controlled\/adjusted with Boss Tone Studio. Now, this is where the modeling happens! Clever guys at Boss came up with digital processing algorithms to replicate the sound of very famous pedals (Muff Fuzz, Rat, DS-1, etc.). On top of that, there are lots of modulation and FX options that you can play with. <br \/>&#8211; The speaker sounds good in all settings. It is loud enough if you use it in 50W mode (for bedroom usage, 0.5W is also great!). <br \/>&#8211; The USB connection is very useful when you want to record your guitar without any microphones. <\/p>\n<p>Cons: (These are cons that are expected and they are no reason to affect the rating.) <br \/>&#8211; No FX loop. So if you want to connect external pedals, you have to connect them in front of the amp, which may\/will result in unwanted sound effects in certain situations. <br \/>&#8211; It doesn&#8217;t support a decent footswitch controller as its big brother 100W does. Therefore, turning on\/off the effects can become really annoying, since you have to turn the knobs to (de)activate the effects. <br \/>&#8211; In order to play some songs through the speakers of this amp by using your PC\/Mac, you have to connect it through the aux-in connection of the amp. You cannot use the USB connection for this reason. <\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"inner text-original js-text-original\" lang=\"en\" data-orig-lang=\"en\"> I bought for my nephew who just started guitar. I heard good things about the Katanas over the past few years and even seen musicians play them in pubs which sounded great. <\/p>\n<p>As a seasoned guitarist who uses higher end tube amps, I was honestly shocked when I played it myself how good it was. <\/p>\n<p>The price of the amp is a steal. If you&#8217;re starting out and need an amo, you&#8217;re are crazy not to get one. It&#8217;s hands down the best bang for buck solid state amp on the market. I was pretty happy with my Frontman, but I decided to try and expand my possibilities with the Katana. <\/p>\n<p>Buying the Katana was a great decision that allowed me to evolve as a guitarist and learn about tones. I moved from the two channels (clean \/ overdrive) of my previous amp to all the different amp modes of the Katana (4 with variation + acoustic) and all the effects it includes. I think this is a great option for exploring possibilities and checking out how different pedals \/ effects sound for those who are not very familiar with tone crafting. At this point I have to say that the sheer number of possibilities can be daunting, but you can always start from the presets or third-party tones available in online communities. <\/p>\n<p>PROS: <br \/>&#8211; A lot of effects and amp modes with endless possibilities for different tones, which allow trying new sounds, especially useful for beginners. <br \/>&#8211; You can connect it to your computer for recording or to manage the tones through the GUI. <br \/>&#8211; 8 patches can be stored in memory, allowing to switch between different tones quickly without using the computer. For this, the switch pedal sold separately is great, allowing to switch while playing. <br \/>&#8211; The effects loop comes in quite handy for my looper pedal. <br \/>&#8211; The amp sounds great to my inexperienced ears. <br \/>&#8211; The power switch allows to play indoors without the neighbors having to call the police. <\/p>\n<p>CONS: <br \/>&#8211; With the huge number of possibilities it might be a daunting task fiddling around with all the options to find the tones you like. Also, the official tone patches were quite limited last time I checked, relying heavily on non-official communities. <\/p>\n<p>Overall, I am really happy with my purchase and would never think about going back to my Frontman after this, I think it&#8217;s great value for the money. I would recommend buying it with the switch pedal for changing channels while playing. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"inner text-original js-text-original\" lang=\"en\" data-orig-lang=\"en\"> Using the Boss Katana with a GA-FC and Expression pedal really opens up access to a variety of tones and effects from the amp. <br \/>I have not enjoyed the sound or experience of modelling amps until I tried this one. The tone is good, most of the effects seem to be near perfect emulations of the actual pedals. <br \/>The software to edit amp settings really allows for a wide tonal palette for your amp but can be a bit tricky to learn and set up (i spent the first 2 days just creating\/editing tones &amp; patches for the amp). But it is worth it. <br \/>The amp itself is also not the heaviest. It is a comfortable weight to be carried by the handle. (something I noted as a gigging musician) <br \/>The power adjustment (0.5W, 50W, 100W) is exremely useful going from apartment, to practice space, to the gig. <br \/>This is by far the most versatile jamming &amp; gigging amp I have come across, but it is essential to have a footswitch (and expression pedal) to exploit the amps features. <br \/>As an added bonus the software allows you to assign quite a few footswitches and expression pedas to give you very detailed control of your sounds &amp; patches from your feet. <br \/>It is definitely a great foundation for a customisable rig!
