I was looking for the ultimate portable, battery operated guitar amp and I can confidently say, I think I&rsquo;ve found it. This tiny combo has all the features you need for practicing and home performances. Its best asset is the lovely crystal clear sound it provides, which is in no way tinny.<\/p>\n<p>The Fly 3 is a little smaller than the average box of 80 teabags. You can pick it up easily in one hand, making it extremely portable. The big sound is a surprise! The casing is well made; sleek and modern looking and the four main control knobs on the top (gain, volume, EQ and delay) are chunky and operate smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>There are two channels, switchable at the touch of a button. I mainly use the clean channel. I have mostly played my Fender telecaster through the amp.I generally have the volume at about halfway up and the gain about a third. This is more than loud enough for me to sing along to, so that will give you some idea of the potential volume the Blackstar can put out. At this level, when I switch to the over-driven channel I get a nice, fairly subtle, crunchy sound with lots of bite. But of course, it can go a lot louder and more distorted than that. It really is quite amazing that these sounds come from this little box. You have to hear it to believe it.<\/p>\n<p>The delay is of fantastic quality for a unit like this. I would say it is equal to using a good quality effects pedal. It ranges from a gentle reverb to a long very clearly defined delay.<\/p>\n<p>I bought this amp about seven weeks ago and have used it a lot, yet it is still operating on the original set of batteries that come supplied with the unit, so I have felt no need to buy the power supply. I am keen to buy the extension speaker cab which turns it into a stereo unit, which must produce an even fuller sound.<\/p>\n<p>Other features are a bright power on light (so you never leave it switched on by accident,) a headphone socket and a line in for an mp3 player. My tunes sound great through it and I also listen to audio books on it.<\/p>\n<p>I just love the unique tone of this Blackstar amp. It&rsquo;s very clear, bright and full. I&rsquo;m a very happy customer. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"inner text-original js-text-original\" lang=\"en\" data-orig-lang=\"en\"> I was a bit skeptical of purchasing this amp at first, I must admit. &#8216;A battery powered amp that sounds good?&#8217;, just didn&#8217;t seem to make much sense to me. However. I am absolutely blown away. I recently moved into an apartment, so I didn&#8217;t want to use a bigger amp and annoy all the neighbours. This amp is a godsend for that, it has a good level of volume, but would perhaps be lacking for a larger living space. Bedrooms and apartments are prime for this amp. <\/p>\n<p>Great features, the gain could have been a bit more for my taste, but it&#8217;s nothing a bit of overdrive can&#8217;t fix! Delay is fine, as is Blackstar&#8217;s ISF tone stuff. The switches and knobs feel like they&#8217;re good quality, nothing is loose. <\/p>\n<p>Of course it&#8217;s a bit plasticy, nothing wrong with that for the price and the quality of the electronics inside though. Can&#8217;t really find a fault with it for my usage. It really isn&#8217;t that loud though, which is perfect for me, but some people may want something that&#8217;s got a bit more power. <\/p>\n<p>Overall great, good price, good quality, good controls. Can&#8217;t fault it myself, especially for practicing at home in a small room. Batteries are meant to last a long time, although I can&#8217;t comment on that as of yet. This one is different. The sound it produces with such a small speaker is stunning and impressively loud. I highly recommend that you get this bundle with the second speaker. It brings the sound quality to another lever. <br \/>It has two channels and both sound very nice. The clean channel is balanced an full and the distortion channel can produce very nice rock and lead tones. <br \/>This amp has a one knob tone control called ISF that controls the mid scoop (make is sound more British or American) instead of the usual TONE knob that cuts treble or bass one at the time. This is in my opinion more useful and you can have great and distinct tones all through the knob range. <br \/>It doesn?t have an effects loop so you may not get the best results when using modulation or time based effects but, it has a built in delay with two parameters (Time and Level) which is great and a big improvement over one parameter delays that you can find in some much expensive and powerful amps. <br \/>You can use it to listen to music by connecting a MP3 player to the Line In jack or use it to play along with your favorite band. You can also record or connect it to a mixing table to gig on bigger venues. <br \/>Can be powered with the included power adapter or with batteries, however they don?t last many hours, as expected. <br \/>The box is plastic, but it doesn?t feel too cheap. The aux speaker output is not standard so, you can only connect a speaker other than the bundled one if you know some basic electronics and build a custom cable yourself. <br \/>Bottom line, this is the best mini amp that I know of. <\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"inner text-original js-text-original\" lang=\"en\" data-orig-lang=\"en\"> I was already a fan of blackstar, way before they got into these bedroom rockers. This amp looks and feels a couple of 100 bucks more expensive than it really is. <\/p>\n<p>Pros: <br \/>&#8211; Features! A lot of them. First, the top control panel has a 3 band EQ (which is not that common in a valve amp at this price), plus the ISF which is really handy. Think of a Metallica tone on the American side and a AC-DC tone on the British side. The clean channel has just a tone knob, but you can live with that, since it has 2 voices. Reverb is good solid sounding, and it works for most situations, but don&#8217;t expect something airy, ambient crazy big. The voice switches are really good as well, giving you a wide palette of tones. <br \/>&#8211; The power reduction switch is one of the best features. I play it in my bedroom, in an apartment, so I need something that is not loud, that delivers power at low volumes, and this amp really does the job. I use it most of the time at 0,5W mode, which is loud enough for my playing, but quiet enough to not disturb my family and neighbours. The 5W mode can be quite loud if you really want that saturated valve tone. <br \/>&#8211; The back panel has even more features. The effects loop works as a charm, and it&#8217;s really handy for time based effects and for noise gate (the amp distortion is noisy). You also have emulated DI out, USB for recording and MP3 input. <br \/>&#8211; Now, one of the most important features for me is the emulated headphones out. It was the decision factor that made me buy this amp. I use headphones a lot, specially at night, and a good sounding headphones out was a non negotiable feature for me. Before this amp, I even bought a Joyo Bantamp Vivo to test it, and ended up returning it because its headphones out was really bad. I didn&#8217;t test a lot of amps, but researching online made me get the conclusion that the Blackstar amps have the best emulated headphones out in the market for valve amps. It&#8217;s awesome! <br \/>&#8211; Sound: I don&#8217;t have many years of experience with amps, but for my ears, it sounds really good! Both in the headphones out, and in the speaker you can get really nice valve tones, beautiful cleans and heavy saturated overdriven tones. Very versatile. It could benefit from having a better speaker though, but it would increase its price. <\/p>\n<p>Cons: <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Not many to be honest. Being very picky: I play mostly metal styles, and I think this amp could have more gain on tap, or a specific modern metal voice built in. Even at the maximum power and gain, I still feel it could have more oompf! Works great for classic metal, but not so much for modern metal. Blackstar had a Metal version of this amp some years ago that was really good, unfortunately they discontinued it. You can stick an overdrive or a distortion pedal in front of it and solve this issue, but this amp is not a metal high gain amp. I would have bought a metal high gain amp if I could find any that has the features that this amp has. I couldn&#8217;t find any. <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The foot switch that comes with it is made out of plastic (the previous versions were made out of metal) and it feels cheap to be honest. But since I use it only at home, it doesn&#8217;t bother me that much. <\/p>\n<p>Overall, a great amp for home use, probably the best. Sounds good on it&#8217;s own and it&#8217;s a great pedal platform. To be honest I was reading flattering reviews about this little amp but I was still unsure. How can such a small and cheap amp do all that the reviewers were mentioning? I went for it anyways since I needed a small battery amp that fits in a backpack and I can take it everywhere I travel. <\/p>\n<p>Now the Blackstar Fly 3 is exactly that, but so much more&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>Starting with the build quality: it feels SOLID. I have no fears putting the amp in my backpack and handle my backpack as usual without getting paranoid about damaging the amp. <\/p>\n<p>Sound quality: Stellar. That&#8217;s the only word. And I am not giving this feedback considering only price to quality ratio but the sound is actually good. If you experiment you can get a lot of different sound genres. I wish there would be a few more tone knobs but I guess it&#8217;s still ok. Also one small caviate is that you cannot get an 100% clean sound. There&#8217;s always going to be a little crunch but you can get it to a bear minimum and extremely unnoticeable. I usually pair it with my Route 66 guitar pedal and use it with the compressor and I get a very dreamy clean sound. Volume is more than enough for in house playing (I actually never go full volume on it) and since a lot of people are going to wonder, I am sure it&#8217;s also sufficient for busking (didn&#8217;t try it myself though since I don&#8217;t do busking)! <\/p>\n<p>Features: I already mentioned that I would appreciate a few more tone knobs but I can live with it. What I really came to appreciate though is the Bluetooth function. I am really happy I paid a few more money for the Bluetooth option and I found myself using it a lot. It basically turns the little amp to a bluetooth speaker that you can pair with your phone\/tablet\/laptop very quickly and practice with backing tracks. One note here is that the knobs on the amp (including the volume knob) do not affect the audio that&#8217;s coming from the connecting device &#8211; they only affect the instrument that is connected with the line in cable (which is very well thought off and useful). Besides the guitar, I also use it for audio books and podcasts. You can just throw it to your bag and take it to the park and listen to music! I highly recommend going for the Bluetooth version. <\/p>\n<p>Battery life: I still have the batteries that came with the amp so I am unsure about the maximum battery life. I also bought the (pricey!) power cable so I mainly use it with that. I&#8217;ve used the batteries though as well for a few hours and they&#8217;re still going strong! <\/p>\n<p>Verdict: amazing amp and it&#8217;s amazing that I paid half the money I paid when I bought my first amp back in the day and I now got double the features and sound! Wish there would be a few more tone knobs but you can&#8217;t have everything with less than 100 euros and the other features that come with the amp definitely override this factor. I cannot think of any reason to buy the version without the Bluetooth function &#8211; you will definitely make a use of that option at some point.
