Guitar Review: Epiphone Hummingbird

I have always encouraged my grandson with his musical `studies` and efforts and he has always responded well to my help. I said that I would buy him an acoustic guitar and he went searching on the web. He was looking for a black guitar [ a bit of a Goth ] but when he came across the Epiphone Hummingbird it was love at first sight. I bought him one on Ebay but the seller was a plonker who did not understand how to pack the instrument and it was ruined !! I then checked out Thomann and discovered that I could buy a brand new electro acoustic version of the Epiphone Hummingbird for just a small amount more than I had paid for the wreck from Ebay. The staff at Thomann were very helpful and patient with my questions and when the guitar arrived we were all very pleased to see the excellent packing which gave 100% protection to this precious instrument. When he got the guitar out of all that packaging I gave it a good going over – checking for any faults – no worries, there were none. It was perfect !! In tune out of the box [ tuned down a tone ] and perfectly in tune all the way up the neck. The finish was just beautiful and the sound of the instrument [ both acoustically and amplified ] was equally beautiful.
This has got to be one of the best buys for an electro-acoustic out there today. I know a bit about guitars – I started playing in 1955 when I was five years old and since then I have owned and played them all – Gibsons, Fenders, Gretches, a Vox, Zemaitis and old Epiphonesand Hofners and I can honestly say that my grandson`s semi-acoustic would sound really good up on any stage with any of them.
Congratulations to Thomann for selling this ultra high quality solid-top electro-acoustic guitar at such a reasonable price and enabling young students to learn on the best. I lost count of the number of friends who gave up on learning to play the guitar because they thought that it was their fault that their efforts sounded so bad – they didn`t realise that the shops were busy selling rubbish that were built all wrong [ frets in the wrong place, bridges in the wrong place etc. etc.]. None of that with Thomann – they did us proud !! I am VERY pleased and you should hearmy grandson play now – sweet !!

I ordered this guitar as I have been a fan of the Gibson Hummingbird for some time, having seen Keith Richards and Jeff Lynne use them and look cool as while doing so. As I am not long out of uni I unfortunately cannot afford the Gibson, but this Epiphone is just a beautiful and affordable for a student. As such, I thought i’d treat myself to this lovely guitar to help pass the time during lockdown.

The guitar came within 5 day to my home in Birmingham, UK and was in perfect condition. The guitar sounds absolutely fantastic with a rich tone. It’s easy to play and is great value for its price; i’m very happy with my purchase. The only thing that might let it down is that the great sound is somewhat diminished when plugged into an amp. Even so, would still buy again!

I simply fell in love with this guitar after strumming my first chords on it, the construction, finish, playability and sound are on a par with a guitar costing significantly more, what a great axe I can’t say it enough, it really sounds like a guitar double its price.
The action is lighter and lower than you’d expect from an acoustic, so while this is still a guitar that likes to be strummed, it’s great for finger pickers as well.
The groover machine heads feel smooth as butter and stay in tune very well. The preamp system sounds great after you fiddle with the knobs for a while and find the "right" sound for yourself.
I love it and highly recommend it to anyone wanting a quality instrument at an affordable price.

I love this guitar, the tone is beautiful, the quality is unbelievable for the price it is very well made and the pick ups and preamp sound amazing, there is a blend fader where you can choose between pickups or gradually blend the sound of the nanomag and nanoflex pickups and this feature works very well. it is fitted with grover gold machine heads which are fantastic at staying in tune, they have a solid precise feel to them I have used thomann before and this is my 3rd purchase from them it arrived super fast and I am extremely happy with the guitar and the superb service thomann offer, if you want a top quality guitar under £500 don’t look any further, this is the one.

I’ve had this guitar for few month now, it sounds fantastic for the price range, good initial setup, fantastic look and feel, easy tune and easy connection for recording purposes.

When you pick up the guitar, you can feel the sturdy construction. the sound coming from the guitar is huge, very balanced between bass and mid-range notes. Stings height is low thus making the playing really easy. Guitar has both mono and stereo plugs for jacks so integration with a mixer or recording interface is really easy.

For me this guitar was an upgrade from a mid range Ibanez and the difference is massive.

Absolutely love the guitar and the full feel it has!

Well what can i say, this is the second epiphone guitar I have purchased from Thomann and its just amazing. It plays like a dream. I was shocked and completely taking away when i started playing it. You can really feel the base when you start playing the guitar, it vibrates through the hole guitar and gives you a feeling of power. The sound through my speakers is just amazing as well. I use the guitar for playing at all my gigs. The guitar was slightly bigger than I imagined but its still a brilliant guitar. The guitar arrived on perfect time and i had full confidence ordering from Thomann there wasn’t a scratch on it. Thank you thomann, I hope to be ordering from you again, 🙂

I recieved the Epiphone Dove Pro this week. The packaging was very well thought put and I am impressed by the recyclable cushioning material. The product box itself seemed to be faultless, and the guitar itself also, aling with all of the additional accessory bags etc. I would be very hard pressed to find any fault with this product or service from Thomann. I intended on playing one in person before purchase, but was unable to do so. When it arrived and I first laid my eyes on it, I couldn’t have imagined it to be any better. Both what I expected and so much more in terms of construction quality and playability. If you are even slightly considering purchasing this guitar, then just do it. You will not regret it. Thomann’s customer service is definitely amongst the best I have ever exerienced. The parcel tracking was helpful and accurate. Great respect to Thomann and their top notch service and proper care in protecting it during transit to my address. I eagerly await to see how it moulds to my playing style in the near future!

Arrived very well packed yesterday.
Early days yet to say how the Dove will sound in a band- but the overall build and sound excellent. Loud bright and full of tone.
Set up quite well- but lowered the bridge slightly. Neck pretty straight.
The biggest issue was the badly finished frets which I have now polished 3 times and they are a lot smoother now. They were not polished before packing and I don’t know how the guitar passed quality control.
Fretboard was dry -but a couple of coats of lemon oil has helped address that.
Switched strings to my usual Martin custom lights and it’s now ready to play.
Plastic bridge saddle a little cheap looking and a little loose-an obvious upgrade on the cards.
Electrics seem to work well and I personally like the simplicity of one tone/one volume.
Nice quality tuners.
A little closer to orangeburst rather than violinburst -but that will change/fade with time.
Once played in solid top should only improve.
So despite a few issues quite impressive value for money.

This review is written after about 10 days of usage.
I was in for a big surprise upon reception of the guitar. Well, I thought that I would get a rather low-end sounding guitar but, as for other reviews, my ears have been delighted. Even the strings are very good, I still did not change them.
The neck is a delight by itself.
The note accuracy is impressive for this budget !
The pickup is crap to my taste, thus I would rather have taken the model without pickup and spent my euros otherwise.
The setup was ridiculous (string height about 5mm!) upon reception. I removed the bridge to find the pickup sensor just below it. SInce I hate the pickup, I simply removed the sensor, this alone brought a height gain of about 2mm. It seems the bridge is not designed to be on top of this sensor… Anyway to finish it up I just had to file down approx. 1 mm of the bridge. Now the setup is good to go.

Comment:

This guitar is a very good choice for beginners and even to someone who is more experienced but has not much money to spend. I personally love the sound of it because it sounds more bright, more "metallic", but it always has to do with the personal taste and the strings have influence on that to. Again personally, i find it very beautiful and it has a very soft wood, very comfortable to grab.

The biggest but i think minimal counter is that the epiphone icon unsticks and it where loose even when i opened it. I took it off and i think it even looks better but it is in fact a slip from the epiphone .

Why Epiphone introduced this Guitar is something of a mystery, as they already have several Slope Shoulder guitars on the market. Perhaps it was to take the place of the superb AJ500 Masterbilt which they dropped, and that was outselling the Gibson J-45 family.

They guitar is very well made and due to the wood’s used, quite heavy, plus it is offered at a low price considering the quality of the woods used and build quality

By enlarging the lower boute, it gives the guitar more of a Dreadnaught sound, which is not to my taste, I much prefer the well balanced tone’s from a proper slope shouldered guitar, however that is personal, the reader should try the instrument for themselves.

Action: Epiphone Guitars always had slim necks and very easy action. On the AJ220 the neck is unvarnished, having a Satin finish giving a smooth movement up and down the fretboard. However, the guitar will not fit in an standard case due to the increased length of the headstock, So I am searching for a case for my AJ220

The guitar was delivered well packaged and on time as usual from Thomman. The AJ220VS is excellent value for money, and outmatches Guitars at 4 or 5 times the cost.

I chose this guitar carefully, have always been a fan of Epiphone, had one many years ago. Still as good as ever -still quality woods – as ever. Precise and well built feels good looks good sounds good nice loud volume. Not quite a Gibson but it is if you correlate price and then I’m not Eric Clapton so it’s fine for me. Many thanks Epiphone for your ever ongoing quality and attention to detail. a pleasant experience.Still retains that special Epiphone feel, look and sound I remember when first learning guitar many years ago – so bit of an emotional reminiscence journey for me!
Chris.

I’m a satisfied buyer of this model (Epiphone DR-100 EB). Beautiful neck, great finish with attention to details. Good sound, stay in tune well for the moment, nice overall feel. The bridge wood arrived with a different color on my model than it looks here, it’s almost light wood with a red tint, but it wasn’t a big deal to me, somehow it’s fitting nice with the color from the neck. I was waiting two weeks for this model to arrive, but I guess it’s mostly because some great things don’t come to easy in life. Great product, such a good value for the money, folks!

I have owned several different guitars through the years and recently decided to give Epiphone a try. Realizing this model is considered to be a ?starter? guitar, did not put me off as I was interested in the tone and feel. In one word? Amazing. This guitar, coming right out of the box, was set up perfectly the neck is slim enough, the factory strings perfect, no need for any adjustments and the sound, the tone and pitch perfect. Play the heck out of it for a few hours an realized that for the price, to my ears, this guitar is much, much better that a ?starter? guitar. I will be using this one a lot. I realize that reviews are to give both pros and cons with a purchase. I live in a different country, Epiphone?s are hard to find here, so I spend time on this website reading reviews, double checking the instruments I am interested in before I purchase. If, after reading the views I had a burning question, I contact the staff and it is answered, no questions so it is very difficult to come up with negatives. I can only say this guitar, especially for the price, is a stunner no question.
