I purchased this guitar from Thomann because I was looking to get my first ‘Floyd Rose’ equipped guitar. I wanted two things from this guitar; tuning stability and a decent set of pickups.

I usually play Les Pauls, but I fancied something different without having to pay for it. The price of these guitars is very cheap for the specification so, as I didnt want to spend much I decided to purchase one. I was expecting to receive a typically ‘metal’ sounding one trick pony guitar, which I was fine about, but I have been blown away by the versatility of it. Other than the signature on the headstock there is no reason to tie this guitar to Iron Maiden. It can play a variety of styles of music and sounds and responds more akin to a proper stratocaster. The bridge pickup is fairly hot and has a decent edge to it, but at half the output the noiseless neck and middle pickups can be rolled back to clean up wonderfully, and are very musical and bluesy.

The build quality of the guitar is exceptional, there are no sharp fret ends, the finish is immaculate and the neck plays beautifully. The Floyd Rose Special is excellent. I spend a while setting this up to how I prefer, but once set up (two weeks ago) I have not touched a fine tuner. It has been in and out of gig bags, done a band practice and been played daily, divebombed quite religiously to some Van Halen tunes and it is still perfectly in tune. I am astounded.

£325 doesnt get you much guitar these days. But it does get you a Jackson SDX, and honestly you wont find a better guitar for the price. If I saw this in a shop I would be drawn to it because of the finish, I’d play it and fall in love with the neck. If I then saw the price tag of £650 I’d buy it and skip home. I wouldnt think twice about this being worth any less, but it is. grab one!

Adrian Smith was the guitarist who first inspired me to pick up and try to learn to play. Nearly 30 years later, I decided to treat myself to a new guitar, and it just had to be this. I was not disappointed.

Some may not like the lack of tremolo cavity, but I appreciate the security of not being able to pull back too hard on the strings – I have broken them at awkward times doing that in the past. Single volume control means you can’t blend the pickups when selecting more than one, which also doesn’t bother me, but might bother others.

It sounds tremendous, either through my modelling board or my Bugera 333, from chunky blues to 80s thrash, it can cover it all. And the single coils sound lush played clean with a little chorus.

The neck is fast, easy and the action very low (OK, I did lower it a bit more myself).

I’ve tried out guitars that cost twice as much that I’d not rate above this one. If you want a Floyd equipped guitar for rock or metal, you can’t really go wrong with this.

Also, "Up the Irons!"

This guitar is a great beginner to intermediate guitar for everyone that want to get a guitar with a Floyd Rose style bridge.

The guitar came intonated perfectly, but I changed the strings right away – for anyone wanting to use .10+ strings – even for .10 strings in E standard you’re going to need 5 strings, which is weird to me, but okay, it works.

The finish is amazing, unfortunately, my guitar had (and still has) paint residue on the FR bridge, and there’s no way for me to remove it without actually damaging the bridge finish. The rest of the finish (the body, neck and the binding) is perfect, though, and I love it.

The bridge works amazingly well, after making sure that the locking nut is secured properly you can whammy away and not worry about the guitar getting out of tune.

The pickups are exactly the way 90% of people claim they are – very muddy and full of low-ends, I would not recommend playing the guitar with a heavy distortion and/or lower tunings. I’ve actually changed the pickups a day after I have received the guitar, I’ve installed Seymour Duncan SH-6 set and it works perfectly, this is my favourite guitar now and it’s great.

If I had lost this guitar today (let’s say that someone stole it from me) I’d definitely buy another one, no doubt about it. I am actually considering buying another one but with the Rhoads body. Chapeau bas for Jackson, 11/10, would recommend to anyone interested in playing heavy rock/metal tunes.

The maple neck is aesthetically pleasing but it is also super smooth and really fast.
The sound from the stock pickups is pretty good too, would probably require a bit of tweaking if recording though.
Floyd Rose is pretty good especially for the price.
All in all a brilliant guitar for the price and really lightweight too.

I play mostly rock/metal and I purchased this guitar with the purpose of playing it mainly at home as a practice guitar. I would feel comfortable using this guitar for gigging as its very solid and sounds great. It has exceeded my expectations and is great value for money. It comes fairly well set up out of the box. The neck is very fast and the fretboard looks great with the sharkfin inlays. The stock pickups are great for the style of music I play and have lots of definition when playing heavily distorted metal riffs. I had been worried about sustain and tone when i purchased this guitar as it is quite small and light, but I couldn’t have been more wrong! Amazing sustain! This guitar actually sounds and feels better than some more expensive ones that I own. In a nutshell, I believe this is probably the best rock/metal guitar that can be purchased in this price range. If I could change anything on the guitar, I would probably swap out the machine heads for locking ones as when using the trem heavily, the guitar goes out of tune easily enough. Other than that, this guitar is perfect.

Comment:

This is a quality guitar for the price. The fretboard is very easy to play and makes bending and vibrato easy. For more complicated chords the fretboard takes a little practise, so you learn not to press strings too hard. The debth of the fretboard means that pressing the strings all the way down to the board will stretch the string so much, it will ring audibly out of tune. But you will easily learn it. And learning a lighter touch will make you better player.

The humbuckers are not the most clear sounding of them all, but one can expect that in this price range. They are still very passable especially in more heavy oriented sounds.

I bought this guitar a few years ago as I wanted to get some experience with a Floyd Rose bridge system. It’s a good guitar to go with if it is your first experience with this type of bridge because of the price – It can be a bit of a headache getting used to the mechanics of restringing/tuning, but that isn’t a fault of this guitar specifically.

I loved the feel of this Jackson right out of the box – the neck is perfect for moving quickly up and down. The action was a tad high but nothing major. It’s a good weight and is very visually appealing – my one issue with the design of the face of the guitar his how close the volume knob is to the bridge as you can accidentally lower/raise the volume when strumming (probably just sloppy playing on my part though!)

The sound is good – perfectly acceptable for the price, the tones can be a bit muddy but I suspect that’s not an issue for the metalheads in the market for an affordable Jackson. You can also get very nice clean tones out of it surprisingly. I’ve had it three years now and it’s still in great condition when treated well.

In summary: Great price, good guitar – recommend as a first Floyd Rose guitar. Great service from Thomann as always.

Comment:

Starting with the cons, mine came slightly out of tune but unlocked so who cares. Some of it’s frets need to be polished a little. Also the low E has some fret buzz so I have to set it up with fresh strings. The bridge is better than I expected on this price tag but for some reason the screws on the back that hold it in place are somewhat screwed in an angle. I don’t know if that’s gonna be a problem. Now on the good stuff! It plays amazingly! The neck is lovely the action is pretty good on most strings, frets feel good and the pickups are pretty damn good. With a proper setup which I’m about to do now it should be perfect! Looks stunning,
