It never has been, and this is how it has earned its place in the hall of fame of music. Because a Dano sounds different, plays different, and demands to be approached and played differently, which in turn inspires different sounds, solutions and different chords, melodies.
The really rudimentary semi-wooden bridge of the original 59 is replaced, in this model, by a much more precise and precisely manufactured wrap around type metal bridge, and the really enjoyable neck & nut seem more playable and again more precisely engineered & manufactured that what I remember from the vintage ones back in the day.
So not only the 59M NOS+ is a somewhat bettered Dano, it also is the real deal , because there is no "custom shop" or "professional" or "Made in XY" overpriced supposedly superior option on offer – it’s just Danelectro, at its best.

If you are a pedal freak this might be for you. It lets the pedas speak for themselves without colouring the tone too much.
Bonus, its cheap and pretty undistructible. If nucelar holocaust ever comes our way, you can be sure the only thing left in this world will be cockroaches and danelectros.

Out of the box the build quality looked very good for the price point and it is certainly very attractive in vintage cream. The control knobs are a bit ‘plasticky’ though. Some have commented that the larger headstock of 12 string guitars can make then feel a bit neck heavy when playing but I’m not finding this to be the case. Perhaps this is due to the positioning of the strap buttons which, when a strap is attached, allow the weight distribution to be nicely balanced.
The label attached to a tuner proudly states "Every guitar set up in USA" (I believe they are actually built in Korea). The string tension had been slackened off 2 or 3 turns for transit and it was a simple job to bring the guitar up to tune, plug into a Marshall 2525C and make some music. Oh oh ….. hardly the epitome of playabiity for anything other than a few ‘cowboy’ chords??? The action was way, way too high.
A check of the neck relief revealed no issue there so it was on to the saddles and more work for my action ruler. Those of the 1st and 6th string pairs were set @ .080" at the 12th fret and the 4 remaining pairs considerably higher with the saddles all set at the same height. The profile of the 14" radius neck was certainly not being followed. Fortunately these are easily adjusted and the saddles were soon lowered to a measurement of .050" at the 6th string (low E) – which incidentally matches that of my PRS CE24 – is buzz free and gives massive improvement for playing barre chords up the neck and string bending (yes, it’s occasionally useful on a 12 string too!)
So now I can look forward creating to a huge range of tone, made possible not just with the 12 strings but the humbucker / single coil pickup configuration combined with a coil tap. Very sweet!
Perhaps I was just unlucky but if what I received is a typical example of a standard setup for the average customer then someone at Danelectro needs to have a re-think. It’s the only thing that prevents me giving it a 5 star rating for an otherwise ‘no brainer’ instrument.

I just love that pickup combination.
You can really hear a difference between all 3 switches. I’ve already found use for all sounds I can get from that guitar. P90 sound is darker/fatter and great for garage stuff like Sonics, White Stripes, Oh Sees, and so on. HB lipstick is brighter and you can get great western-like sounds from it. When paired together (middle switch position), you get well balanced sound for everyday use 🙂
Another thing, this guitar sounds amazing acoustically. It resonates very good and has unique sound to it.
And last but not least, the sustain. That sustain, man. Never heard such good sustain on guitar for this money. I’ve played open chord, put guitar down, left to get groceries, came back and its still ringing (well now I’m exaggerating but you get the point:)

setup out of the box was very nice. once tuned intonation was spot on.
The action was a tiny bit high but I prefer it really low. in a few seconds i was able to set it to my liking without any fret buzz.
the sound is the danelectro sound. And it is where i got sad. It is not the guitars fault, but it turned out that what I liked on yt videos and sound samples I could not get along well in person. I tried it with H&K tube heads, randall and laney tube combos, transistor combo. but it simply is not for me. It is not the guitars fault, nothing wrong with it. it is just too bright and airy and chimey for my liking.
