Comment:

I’m a big fan of Tangerine Dream and owning a Waldorf Quantum provided me with the opportunity to utilize a wavetable synthesiser ( along with waveform, particle and granular synthesis) and try and emulate PPG-type sounds with equipment. I will, use this in order to make Berlin class music for our pleasure and for quick film soundtracks etc.

This is a solidly built (pressed steel) LED-emblazoned thing of beauty. Perhaps the expression and pitch wheel are metallic! Viewing it in subdued lighting transports me (pun intended) to,the connection of a SciFi journey deck: It’s thrilling. The keyboard has a great feel that is positive. It’s a really unit that is hefty again lends it a sense of quality. On powering it up, I updated the firmware as suggested before delving into the noises.

the majority of the spots are….harsh, digital, abrasive noises perfect for soundtracks and scaring ones underwear off at night! There are a few bell-like ringing sounds but there are no really smooth string-like pads that is a shame that is great. The Quantum is capable of creating as opposed to acting as beginning points from where one can develop usable noises to tell the truth I feel these patches had been developed to exhibit from the extreme sounds. Slime will require to that, other people will find it tiresome.

I have seen some software glitches such as display screen going white, ticks and buzzes whenever standing idle, phrase being stuck in the on position most of which required the Quantum become rebooted.

the consumer manual is pretty worthless and I count on the Waldorf forum members for assistance. They truly are a great resource, helpful and SO knowledgable .

to conclude the Quantum has military-standard construction, a temperamental firmware, digitally harsh sounds (use Youtube to listen to a few of the patches), nevertheless the vast freedom means I’m going to have years of fun developing sounds and exploring its abilities.

I’m a guitarist but I love synths, I had a genuine plastic ‘Wasp’ straight back in the day along side a couple of Roland electric guitar synths.. Now I just fuss with software synths in a DAW. I saw online videos associated with Microfreak and chose to get one and I have always been super impressed, this thing is a super flexible and beast that is effective. The keyboard isn’t an issue over MIDI if you prefer for me at all but is most likely not to everybody’s taste – though of course it is possible to play it. The noise sources are great and diverse while the filter and modulation matrix are kinda the icing in the cake.

There isn’t much point in me trying to explain the sounds and features here, you can find lots of informative videos on youtube but I will say that I believe it is great fun and simple to use and is effective at making some good sounds. It has CV and gate outs too so now I’m vulnerable to benefiting from modular stuff, ha ha!

Out of this package the synth worked great but I did notice a couple of weird problems, often filter settings would leap around and also the key hold would activate arbitrarily. At first I thought it had been simply my fingers that are fat seemed perhaps not. The firmware was checked by me personally variation and sure enough it had been out of date. I downloaded the Arturia MIDI control software and used that to upgrade the firmware and to update the presets to your 1.1 version and all sorts of the nagging problems just disappeared, really, happy. Bear in mind that this is certainly a 4 sound paraphonic synth not merely a monosynth, actually I do not observe you can fare better for the cost.

Comment:

I’m utilized just bunch of good VST before, i’m completely content with them. But once i wished to have a not virtual, a "real" instrument to own another workflow style, and, consequently, different paths considering creativity. Portability ended up being a criterion that is big.
After long researching of some variations, microfreak had becomes my choice. I had lot of fears and skepticism about any of it, but cost of the synth is a flavorsome.
Also it’s difficult to estimate all possibilities with only dry noise. I was thinking, good results that are additional result in the noise really awesome, but was not too sure. Sound demos, what i found in internet just about all ended up being with dry sound or slightly slurred in my experience.
whenever i received and try it on my own- all good objectives had been confirmed.

This little thing can several things, but at first it isn’t so obvious. It is cool to play i understood how to use it rapidly along with it. In a few means It’s not so easy, as utilizing virtual instruments, but it is much more pleasant.
Microfreak features its own noise design, and this rocks !, because individuality is benefit. Some aspects, with contrast with some my VSTi’s i never have therefore effective, but microfreak has its own powers and possibilities, what i’m have not before.
Microfreak won’t have its very own impacts. Some patches getting good without one. However if use alternative party effects, sonic opportunities and power increasing plenty.
I’d advise to get good impacts using the synth, gear or plug-ins, at least one good reverb, this worthy of it.

Sound of the synth is electronic, and incredibly quality. It is sound much better than a few of my vsti’s, sometimes also without additional results.
Microfreak filled with good sides of digital sound.
The synth have capability to create analog- style appears, but i question, whatever they therefore cool, as real analog. Anyhow the synth sounds a really cool in digital sonic design.
But filter let me reveal analog. Some oscillator modes have actually features, exactly what making filter not important to utilize using them, but the filter is real cool, it is work smooth and sometimes making sound "warmer".

Modulation matrix rocks !. It’s really easy, if get accustomed to it, and provide a whole lot of opportunities. You can also modulate level of other modulations!

I love the keyboard. In some means not too good as "traditional" keyboard, but i’m, as pianist, do not feel conservative negativity about that sensor decision, it’s just different option to play.
For me it is comfortably and enjoyable to utilize. And it is actually expressive. I’m certain, this flat keys better, then inexpensive secrets with bad velocity control or without it.

I never very like a sequencer and arpeggiator, because i accustomed to DAW’s using their medical control of every thing, but anyway seem’s useful. But i really like a chance of modulating something from sequencer/arpeggiator.

If you need affordable, small, fun and interesting digital synth- the Microfreak is a great decision, i think.
However, if you need just only features, and also you not obsessed about control of genuine tool, or just around unwonted workflow; or perhaps you can’t stand electronic sound- maybe it’s can disappoint you.

+ Great noise, filter.
+ Well made out of quality. A exceptions being few this though.
+ really customisable noise and settings.
+ Well incorporated with updates and computer software.

– may be too digitalized for some users.
– Odd build quality in the pitch wheel.
– Steep learning curve. Very hard to have a grasp all of the features.

First off, this synth is actually beautifully contructed. The quality is truly great through and through except in one place. The pitch wheel. Going it upwards lets you hear the springtime moving with it along with a feel that is slight of that. I do worry a bit in regards to the quality for the information knob because of the fact that it’s the tool you will be utilizing to navigate all of the menus, and additionally find the various patches.

Soundwise the synth does very well both with varied presets and options to create your own personal sounds. There is a emphasis that is obvious digital here. Most presets works best for electronic music, causeing the stellar if you’d like a more analog feel to your productions. The combination of great general sound and a stellar filter is a plus that is big. The microphone appears to do it is job really well. I haven’t had the opportunity to properly test it out however.

The focus on electronic continues as you are able to change all of the settings and factors through the screen that is little the usage of the data-knob. You can even bind effects which can be different values to the four knobs on the right for the synth. There clearly was a total of two rows that can be assigned to yours style. The amazing filter really assists causeing the synth stand out, and so they understand it, including a large knob solely for the usage of it.

There are also a row of eight pads you can use to either change the arpeggio or "animate". The "animate" establishing enables fast transformations for the sound. For instance a simple saw lead could be transformed to relax and play 5ths using the press of a button. It may become distorted, modulated, flanged. Pretty something that is a lot possible, and it would clearly be a fantastic device for a stage performance. By navigating the display screen you can also make your own animations and personalize the noise for your own requirements.

The Mininova can be plugged directly into your PC and via software it is possible to for example import patches which are brand new. You may want to export the spots causing you to able to import your saved information to a Mininova that is different if so wish. Novation often gives out free packages of preset patches from their other analog synths like the Supernova or Bass Station frequently filling up the onboard room. You’ll likely need certainly to select among the list of sounds you need.

Now to your less sides which are great. This analog synth is quite digital. A lot of the controls are based on navigating the application menus. For me personally it had been an annoyance because I wanted to go a bit away from the electronic tools.

I guess it absolutely was an ideal choice anyway to expand the customisability of this synth while not cluttering the design with knobs and levers every-where.

Comment:

The Mininova is a quality entry level synth. It’s a lot of pre-loaded patches, that are organised into useful categories.

The vocoder is decent, you will soon be restricted to about six useful spots. The synth is primarily monophonic, but you can change all the patches to be polyphonic, that is a fantastic choice from the box.

One other great feature is the ability to pick eight spots as your favorites and assign them to your Favorites buttons. This makes it surely simple to switch between noises in a setting that is live.

The synth has two oscillators that can be modified whenever you want. You additionally have the option of including effects and filters which are using. You can find multiple arpeggiator options in the main menu that can be assigned to each of the patches.

At this price point, your choices would be the Mininova plus the Microkorg. The Microkorg is ideal for creating sounds, the Mininova has more pre-loaded patches.

Overall, the Mininova is an excellent synthesizer and well worth the price.
