Is the Roland Mobile Cube Worth buying?

Some comments from people who come to the forum about this model:

Comment:

I was looking for a small and simple amplifier that could reproduce the sound of my electric guitar as accurately as possible and the Roland Mobile Cube attracted my attention. I got tired of guitar combos that are packed with unnecessary (for me) features and have speakers that hype certain frequencies. Worst of all, most of them are designed to offer distorted tones that are absolutely useless for jazz. Even though I didn’t expect much out of such a small amp, I decided to give it a try.
As soon as I took the Mobile Cube out of the box, I noticed how well built it was. The fit and finish, as well as the quality of materials, is amazing! I couldn’t find a single imperfection! It may look like a novelty item but it feels like it’s been built to last. Sure, I could complain that all of the jacks are made of plastic but so are the jacks on certain amps that cost ten times as much…
When I turned the Mobile Cube on, I was blown away by how quiet it was. It produced so little noise that I thought it wasn’t even working. As soon as I started playing, I was very pleasantly surprised by how big it sounded. I most certainly didn’t expect two four inch speakers to fill the room as well as they did. The frequency response is extremely flat and the volume is much louder than its modest power rating would suggest. Since it’s a stereo amp, it produces a true chorus effect, just like the legendary Roland JC-120. To me, it sounds much more natural than the chorus found in other amps. I must add that the reverb is great, too. Very warm and natural sounding.
Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase. The Roland Mobile Cube does everything I want it to do and it does it perfectly. If you’re looking for a small amplifier that would provide an accurate reproduction of your instrument’s tone, you should definitely give the Mobile Cube a try.

Roland do great amps, full stop. I bought this for outdoor gigs in our little town square.it works really well, just about enough volume to get ur voice and guitar across. I also have the Roland street cube. What I like about this little baby is you can screw it onto a stand also. It has some great features on it . For me the big plus is portability, battery operated amps and street gigs go hand in hand. It takes acoustic and electric guitars with ease.
Granted, the street cube has more power etc, but this little brother has it’s place
They are great quality amps and mine has held up well since a bought it

Roland Cube Street Ex Review And Demo

Some comments from people who come to the forum about this model:

Comment:

I tried a Cube Street (non EX) before purchasing this.

As a PA: Backing music + Guitar + Singer this is the unit to get. Period.

The set of speakers have a much better overall sound for the job, pristine highs and more bass and is also loud.

As a Guitar amp alone is also very good, it is LOUD!…it will give you more than enough dBs even at medium power.

The models are good, certainly usable, I like specially the Clean and Overdrive tones for Jazz, but I tried the crunch/lead and sounds about right to me, good bassy chug chug sound and good metal lead.

The reverb is quite decent and you DO need it since is stereo and your guitar input is gonna be mono (they could do it stereo I guess, but that means double the DSP taken by the amp model)…so with this unit you want to use mono based FX pedals as Gate/Comp/Mono Chorus/Delay.

You can also connect your guitar to the Line Inputs, so if you have a stereo pedal (as a MT100BT) it would work perfectly.

I don’t think the reverb sounds metallic or unpleasant at all, the delay could benefit of some volume knob, currently you can only adjust the delay time with the knob. Thankfully Roland set the delay volume so is usable in most scenarios, from slapback to long delays. I’m gonna be using my FX pedal anyway.

The three band EQ in Instrument/Mic sections is very welcome, I had troubles getting a good voice on the smaller Roland Street as it didn’t have a "mid" band.

I think this amp has everything you need, plus the portability. It is indeed not as heavy as it looks.

I would recommend the smaller Street for those who need just a guitar amp, I’ve got the Red one before and is light loud and very cute for just a guitar. But for those wanting an all round solution this is the way to go.

I will probably buy another at some point to have the pair and be able to open the stereo.

Still testing this amp but first impressions are it is almost exactly what my daughter needs for busking. There are a number of YouTube demos and reviews, make sure you watch those too. Impressive that so much can be got from just 8 AA batteries – quality appear solid and most of the modelled amps are useful – though ‘crunch’ seems a little useless for my daughters uses – also she would prefer a system that allows boosted channels of any of the voices to be saved, and to be able to access these via the footswitch – my understanding is that it’s only possible to turn reverb and chorus on and off with the basic footswitch that is compatible with the amp – i.e. there’s no way of creating a lead boost of any of the modelled amps for solo use – for this it looks like you need to use a separate pedal board with a boost pedal and play your board’s effects through the amp’s clean channel. The CUBE iPad app is good, but a few more features, like the ability to control channel volumes, and guitar volumes, instead of just the volume of the backing track when playing live, would have been good – as would have been a more ecconomical carrying case!

UPDATE – after 8 months the amp has developed a fault on the main power switch – seems like a loose connection / solder, power cuts intermittently and without warning, also power switch often doesn’t turn on power unless the whole unit is tilted forward. Contact Thomann and awaiting return details from Customer Services Dept.

normally when I hear of a ton of people saying how great a product is, I have my doubts. I was in need of a bedroom practice amp so I challenged everything I could within the same price range. vox 3, vox 5, roland micro cube, fender mustang, etc. Here is what I think:

If you are looking for a high gain setting at bedroom levels, look no further! It is truly remarkable how wicked this sounds at such a low volume! It has a lot of tones but really the most usable (to me) are the high gain setting and the JC clean channel. The vox does cleans better but doesn’t allow you to get those nice pinch harmonics as with this unit.

The processing is cheap plastic, but, thick enough that it seems like it could take a beating without problems. Pair that with the metal grill on the front and you dont have to worry about it when you take it camping 😉

The only problem I have is when on the clean setting I seem to get some kind of ground loop… on multiple guitars… hopefully it is an isolated problem..

I needed something which is easy to carry and nice sounding. After I saw all the reviews I decided to buy this amp, and so far its a really great amp ! small, can be battery operated. Inside of the box was adapter, handling strap and aux cable ! Sound quality is very nice ! built in effects works well ! You can fit it to you luggage or backpack It is not very heavy and it is durable. Basically if you are looking for a portable practice amp or to bring with you to the beach or whatever, in my opinion it is the best amp for the price and the features it has !

I already used one like this and they are awesome! Problem: Now with the Brexit, I am still waiting for the parcel after 15 days. There is no point, I have been taxed by the UK government (not Thomann’s fault) 69 pounds if I wanted to enter my parcel in the UK (205 pounds was the total value of the shipment). Thomann: nice as always, ordering from Thomann after Brexit: HELL.

Comment:

I had to decide between this and several other in the same price range with more features. In the end I am quite pleased with the choice. The sound quality is very good and it can get quite loud for its size. Also the various amp models and effects that it offers make it quite versatile and an instrument on its own.

Roland Cube 10GX Demo - A Brilliant New Practice Amp

Some comments from people who come to the forum about this model:

Up to now I had blackstar ht1r , randall rd1c, blackstar ht metal 1, orange dark terror, roland micro cube. I must say that although there is a pressurising tube amp hype all around the globe I find digital modelling amps quite useful, very good sounding, inspiring and easy to use. We also should remember that many pro guys also use digital preamps instead of tube amps. I am extremely happy with the Cube series, especially the rectifier sound it is useful and good sounding both on solos and chunky rhytm playing. I dont know if it is natural or not. I tried at home blackstar ht series, randall rd1 and the dark terror. I still like the cube 10 gx and dont think to sell it. All cube series are very good amps. One thing I think this amp lacks is the option to have rest of the cosm sounds. You cant install ‘extreme’ or ‘dyna amp’ models to it? Why is that roland. Even the micro cube has the extreme model.

Comment:

This modelling amp is a real surprise:
From nice clean sounds to beefy distorted ones…

It has 3 presets which come from factory as Clean, Crunch and Heavy. You can also program in lots of other sounds using an audio cable (guitar cable will work with the adapter that comes with the amp), and the APP on your phone.
The Rectifier is great for metal sounds.

It has headphone out jack which I use to record via PC, and Line in which is good for playing along to your favorite songs.

Also the amp has built in effects accessed from a dial. These are good but you can only use one at a time.

All in all a great sounding and compact amp – great for practicing as well as experimenting with different tones.

Roland Micro CUBE GX Guitar Amplifier Demo w/ Tom Quayle

Some comments from people who come to the forum about this model:

Comment:

I have recently started playing guitar at 40 something! I wanted a simple small amp that made a reasonable sound and did not take up too much room.
My son has been playing guitar for years and was a bit sceptical, he did wonder if something so small could make a decent sound. We did some research on the internet and watched You Tube videos and it certainly seemed to tick the boxes.
I ordered it and it came to the UK in about a week (with some other items I ordered at the same time).
I am so thrilled with it, it looks very solidly made and though small feels tough. It sounds amazing and it can be turned up quite loud.
It has lots of amp choices including acoustic, clean, rock and a metal sound so it really is versatile. It has effects and also either reverb or delay (my son said it is a shame that you can’t have both at the same time).
It does have a memory and you can store your sound against the amp and it will remember it which is a handy feature.
It is extremely portable so I would imagine it would be great for busking.
You can listen through headphones (which is a feature my husband is very keen on!) and you can also plug in your MP3 or phone and play backing tracks through it.
If you have an iPhone or iPad there is a great app called Cube Jam which you can use to play backing tracks through and also record yourself and save the file – you can change the pitch and also speed too so quite handy. Unfortunately this app is not available on android though.
Very pleased with this cube!

I have a few amps of varying power and size at my house, and this small thing is amazing for travelling and room practise esp. in my second flat. Mind you, it is able to rattle the windows, it is LOUD if pushed to the limit. The sound effects are really good, the clean channel is … very clean even for classical guitar. It will take 6 AA batteries (allegedly 24 h autonomy but mine does more, of course it depends on what you do 🙂 ). ALso works on the power supply (included). Nothing to say, just hesitate on the colour, but get this if you need the features.

I just received this amp a few days ago. It is a fantastic tool and turned out to be a lot better than I expected. I had been using the Roland Micro cube while performing at small gigs and functions, as I play with an Uileann Piper, and guitarist I need a boost to my sound to bring my sound up to the level of the pipes. The Mobile AC is so much better, sharper, truer and all round great sound. I play guitar and Irish Bouzouki through the Roland AC. It has changed my world, makes playing so much easier. It it a ‘Magic music machine’. Thank you Mr. Roland.(and Thomann of course)

Comment:

I found this amplifier fabulous for practice and for its size it’s got a lovely sound and you can’t beat Roland!! It’s also very portable to carry around.
