I ordered this the same time as a Yamaha fg from another company. Neither the Yamaha or this Baton Rouge were set up to my liking, the Yamaha was high though the nut was cut correct, the rouge had its high e and b strings to high at the nut which made it like trying to play on cheese wire, the Yamaha all glossy and shiny, the rouge in a matt finish.
Now I wondered which I would return, to me the Yamaha was too bright and left you hearing overtones, a distinct lack of bass and every time you picked it up you felt like it had to be cleaned. Now the rouge, with its matt finish doesn’t need the constant pampering, you pick it up play it and put it down after, no problems. So I set this rouge up, lowered the bridge piece, cut the e and b slots a little deeper in the nut and put it all back to working order. It’s now turned from a nearly sent back to a diamond, it has a lovely sound and nice sustain, a fantastic fingerprint free finish and the best thing, and the reason I ordered it in the first place is the wider neck at the nut. For a player that’s mainly played bass for years, this extra bit of neck gives my fatter fingers more space. To top it off, it is nearly string for string spacing as my D’Angelico nylon string, so no playing adjustments needed when swapping between guitars.
So to finish my story, a £300 pound Yamaha was returned in favour of this little gem of a guitar, everyday it grows on you more and more until you just can’t leave it alone.
