Having given away my travel guitar in the Far East I was looking for something cheap to be my travelling companion for days out and holidays. Having seen the kind of punishment an instrument can get on the road or in the air (even if you are careful). I did not want to spend very much on what would be my "Beater" guitar. These are my findings and thoughts on what I got.

First of all, the service (particularly by Thomas) at Thomann was first class. I couldn’t be happier with the communication or their expediency.

My CG-45

Arrived securely boxed, well packaged and protected.
It was exceptionally light. Now for me this was a bonus, for others this would be a minus. There is of course a trade-off in terms of sound. Please keep in mind all the time, the actual price of this guitar though.

I put some Martin strings on it and "Oh Boy!" Now THAT is more like it.In fact, I liked it so much I took it to my guitar tech to install a pre-amp and piezo just in case.

I would not recommend this as a first or beginner guitar. It walks a fine line between toy and instrument. A person starting out would do better in my humble opinion to go for something they can grow with it. Buy the best instrument you can afford. Look at the top of the range Harley Benton’s as well as the more "famous" brands.

I have had this guitar over a year now and it is holding up well. Keeps tune pretty good (often a problem with cheaper guitars). Would I gig with it? No. But I would use it as an emergency back-up.

I didn’t bother with the stick-on pickguard and a small niggly point, the stickers added to look like mother of pearl on the tuners don’t do it for me, nor does the printed rosette, but remember that price? I thought it was worth spending that amount again to electrify it. Just change the strings and you can have a very servicable laminate guitar like "Woody" too.

My ratings are based on one might expect for the price point. I’m not putting this up against a Taylor or a Martin because that simply wouldn’t be fair.

I got this guitar just as a stop-gap while on a lengthy business trip. It arrived in good condition with no obvious damage. The strings were protected in a full-length paper sheath, which was nice to see. One thing that struck me as a little peculiar was that the pickguard was not installed. Instead, it was included in the box with the option to peel off the backing and stick it on. Never seen that before. I opted to leave it off because I think it looks better without it.

I tuned it up to E Standard and noticed that the action at the 12th fret was about 1/2 inch. I adjusted the truss rod to bring the neck back to straight with the included Allen key (nice, handy) and it was still about 1/2. I cast about and looked at the bridge. The plastic bridge was clearly the culprit. I sanded off a good 1/3 inch off the bottom of the bridge and now it plays quite nicely.

The body of the guitar is narrower than full-sized guitars but produces a bright, full sound. There’s not a speck of gloss on the entire thing, so the overall feel is very natural and pleasing to the touch. I’ve played it for about 6 hours and noticed that the neck takes skin oils very well.

The tuners are a touch sticky, but I suspect a touch of WD-40 will remedy that.

Overall, it’s a good value for the price. I will say that it takes a little work to be playable, so if you are considering this for a first guitar, be ready to learn a little about setting up an acoustic.

The Harley Benton HBD 120BK is an acoustic guitar in the dreadnought construction style and which comes at a sensational price. The bottom and sides are made of sapele, and despite the fact that the laminated spruce top may not be as large as on other models, it uces such a powerful and clear sound that you could hardly expect more from such a well-priced (really!) guitar.
