Before purchasing this I bought a Panorama P6 (see my review on here) as I thought it had been exactly what I needed to incorporate with my DAW (Logic), but more to the point I wanted a controller keyboard with an excellent feel as I’d been utilizing a classic M-Audio Keystation 61es for years and it just didn’t feel good to my fingers.
Anyway, long story short, the P6 had great action – for part of the keyboard – and varying characteristics through the other areas of one of the keys bed. This having said that has that Roland that is reliable keybed simply seems great. It is like a controller keyboard should feel in my experience – in contrast to a piano, and not attempting to be like a piano, just well made.
The fact that the locator buttons and sliders integrate seamlessly into Logic is another plus, although I did just like the proven fact that the P6 had unlimited encoders rather than physical potentiometers just like the A-800 has – made tweaking parameters easier. However, that is not a big problem for me as I’m more old-skool within my method of recording – preferring to record real time instruments in the main rather than endlessly tweaking synth parameters etc.
The velocity curves are superb as well as the keys are actually responsive. Individually I’m not a fan of this Roland “joystick” control when it comes to modulation, but as you are able to designate modulation to at least one regarding the other knobs it isn’t an issue, and actually you obtain the very best of both globes because I do actually choose Roland’s joystick control with regards to pitch bend.
So, if you’re finding a controller keyboard with an excellent synth-like keybed that is made really well then you definitely can not really go wrong using the A-800. It is a pleasure, and inspirational to relax and play.
Comment:
that is why I offered it and I’m purchasing a synthesizer (Roland Juno-Di).Pros because of this keyboard:
– very lightweight
– heavy weight
– good secrets (although needless to say I’d prefer weighted ones, but I comprehend it’s totally impossible in this price and weight)
Cons:
– pads sensitivity is strange
– mod/pitch joystick: I’m used to split tires, which be seemingly much more appropriate of these purposes
– possibly it’s certain in my experience or it is common to all or any MIDI-keyboards, but I didn’t find a sensible way to arranged quickly-switchable programs on this keyboard, i.e. I used 8 pc software instruments and I had to make use of pads to quickly switch among them. Another option is to use sequencer control buttons for that, but that’s a bit that is little.
Also, I constantly wanted each fader to have a on/off key, but this keyboard doesn’t have this feature.
