I’ve had my li’l ol’ Squier Affinity Strat for about 10 years and I love it to bits. Thankfully, it’s still going strong, which is testament to it’s build quality – especially when I consider some of the things I’ve put it through (fending off large animals / drunk folk, using it as a hammer) and it’s almost daily use for tutoring, practice, rehearsals and gigs.

Around 2 years ago the original pots and selector switch started to crackle a bit, so I replaced all the electrics and treated it to some upgraded pups – the originals weren’t bad, I just seized the moment to put some specific ones in it – along with a new tortoiseshell pickguard and back plate to tart up it’s look. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not faulting it for the electrics beginning to expire after 8 years of abuse, or for me getting bored with the white pickguard. In fact, it’s difficult for me to fault my Affinity Strat at all. It’s been great to play from the get-go – only minor tweaks required to the set up when changing string gauges / using different tunings – with the maple neck and finger board feeling great in the hand for a groove, while still allowing one to go a bit shred when required. The frets are frets and the mechanicals are nothing special (stock tuners and a bog standard Strat trem), but they all do their jobs fine. And it was cheap as chips (under £100 new), when I got it back in the day.

As for the aesthetics, it looks like a Strat. In black. With white plastic bits and chrome metal bits, that can all be easily changed to transform it’s look. But it’ll still be black. Unless of course, you refinish it. Hmmm, where did I put my blowtorch….

Moving on and in conclusion, from what I’ve seen of the incarnations down the years (quite a few of my students have had Affinity Strats), not a lot has changed with these guitars. They are what they are – great budget guitars that are fun to play.

Started learning guitar on this model . Looking back in time, compared to the other guitars I own now this was a great guitar to start with . It feels great, it’s lighter than the "premium" models, the sound it’s ok and the price it’s nothing compared to what you get in return .
