I play bass – and have forgotten how to play guitar. I just needed something that I could strum chords on while I thought about what bass to play over them. To that end, this guitar is far better than I needed, and, with a 32+cm neck radius, not ideal. I was really looking for something with a tighter radius so I could bar with my arthritic third finger but still play the E string cleanly. However, as everyone’s a shredder these days, and the Thomann range offers little under 30cm, and based on many reviews, I decided on the TE90. I was not disappointed. the neck is beautiful – looks like a dirty road-worn maple (vintaged without the pretentiousness). The pups sound great and the knobs are true and responsive. the chambered body make it really light (I think, like I said I play bass and all guitars feel like they are made for princesses). The body paint (I have the red and black) has bags of character, and I love the bridge (can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t). It is very smooth and low profile which makes it very comfortable under the right hand – and creates an overwhelming urge to palm-mute. The only disappointment for me is the reverse headstock. It appealed because I thought it had character, but in truth it is a pain. Turning such closely packed tuners from below is not ergonomic; if you manage to alight on the correct tuner, it is so easy to knock its neighbour out of tune – style over substance. I had considered getting a leftie for my daughter, and swapping the necks, but I couldn’t justify that. If anyone is deciding to swap out the tuners, remember you will need a set suitable for a leftie tele.
Just after I placed the order for this, my brother bought me a Squire Toronado, out of the blue. It too is a beautiful object, with slightly better knobs and a tighter fret radius, but honestly, I prefer playing the TE90.
