Comment:

I’ve owned this guitar for a number of years now and can recommend it to anyone looking for a versatile Strat style guitar. Build quality is solid and action is pretty good.

The blend of the P90 at the neck and the Custom 5 at the bridge makes it possible to generate a lot of different tones and although the humbucking pickup are not very hot it’s entirely possible to generate good classic rock sounds and even heavy rock sounds from this guitar.

It’s not well suited to shredding or heavy metal but I’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it, it stays in tune fairly well and I’ve had no issues with the tremolo although I’m more a subtle vibrations kind of guy than a Steve Vai

Comment:

First of all, I ordered the guitar with great expectation. I didn’t care it is a below 1k guitar. I believed in Yamaha’s quality standards and got amazed by the reviews. I was biased.

The comfort that guitar gives, the tone you get, the neck and fretboard profiles, the feeling that you get while playing… All amazing! Wood selection and finish is amazing to eye,

However, when you need to adjust your tuning, when you don’t want to re-tune your guitar between every single song that you use the vibrato arm or some bends in, tuning heads are like little nightmares! Especially on 6th, 5th and 1st strings… The Wilkinson tremolo is much more robust comparing to fender vintage 6-pole tremolo bridge, it takes some getting use to, but I can’t complain, preference is the difference!
SD PUs left me just speechless, especially P90 neck PU. However, the pots are total disappointment. Push-pull tone pot had a gap around its shaft that made noise even with a slight touch. Plus, both pots had noise when you want them to do their job, turning around a shaft only to adjust something without noise… I am well aware it can be a faulty unit, but I am also aware a faulty unit shouldn’t see any customer if you care about QA and QC.

In short, as a 3rd electric guitar to a home player, occasional busker, it had too much to work on to make it enjoyable. If you are looking for a good work horse that can shine after spending some 100 bucks to improve the pots and tuning heads, this guitar is probably one of the biggest price-performance giants in below 1k range!
